Cantina Talk: The Last Jedi Might Begin With an Epic Showdown Between Leia and Snoke

Bad news, everyone: It's not December yet, so the 8-bit trailer above is the closest you're going to get to seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Still, at least it's been approved by director Rian Johnson himself. Meanwhile, the world is so hungry for information about the new movie that folks are getting excited about fuzzy pictures of toys based on Kylo Ren's TIE fighter. They know that's not a good look, right? At any rate, news and rumors out of the Star Wars universe are a hot commodity—and we've got the most scorching bits right here.

The Last Jedi Might Begin with the Face-Off You've Been Waiting For

Source: Internet rumormongering
Probability of Accuracy: For now, almost impossible to tell.
The Real Deal: Now that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is seven months away people are starting to wildly speculate about its plot details. First up, Nerdist, which claims the movie will begin with a showdown between General Leia and Supreme Leader Snoke. While that's not impossible, it's certainly at odds with director Rian Johnson's assertion that the movie picks up immediately after the end of The Force Awakens. If Nerdist's rumor and Johnson's claims are both true that would give Leia very little time to discover where Snoke is and get there … unless there is more going on than first meets the eye. Surely Snoke wouldn't kidnap the leader of the Resistance and mother of his favorite Sith wannabe, would he? Hmmm.

So Where Did Snoke Come From, Anyway?

Source: Official Star Wars canon and a bunch of inference
Probability of Accuracy: Despite the obviously speculative nature of this, it does have an air of authority.
The Real Deal: Speaking of Supreme Leader Snoke, /Film did a deep dive into some ancillary material and has come up with a pretty convincing theory about the true origins of the First Order's leader. If this hypothesis is to be believed, Snoke hails from outside the known galaxy, possibly from Wild Space or the Unknown Regions—both areas that supposedly contain kyber crystals and Force-sensitive beings. Those areas have specifically been named in the Thrawn and Star Wars: Aftermath novels as being home to a threat that might be even more evil than the Empire, which may or may not have been trying to seduce the Emperor from afar. Tellingly, the conclusion of Aftermath: Empire's End involves the remnants of the Empire heading into the Unknown Regions in an attempt to regroup. What happened between then and The Force Awakens? Is Snoke an outsider who's corrupted an already corrupt organization even further, and if so, to what end?

The Last Jedi Will Have More IMAX Sequences Than Force Awakens

Source: People who pay money for IMAX tickets
Probability of Accuracy: 100 percent correct.
The Real Deal: For those who went to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in IMAX theaters, there was a Star Wars treat ahead of the main attraction: a special version of the Last Jedi trailer that featured five sequences shot in the larger format, including Rey's training, a sequence with Walkers, and a mysterious scene that may or may not have been the destruction of the Jedi Temple that drove Luke Skywalker into hiding. That is four more sequences shot in IMAX than The Force Awakens, which featured only one, and there's no sign that Johnson only shot those five sequences in the oversize format.

There's More Where Rogue One Came From (Maybe)

Source: The mind behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Probability of Accuracy: It's a tease, but that doesn't mean it's an unconfirmed tease.
The Real Deal: Not content with just dreaming up the idea behind Rogue One, ILM visual effects guru John Knoll is apparently at it again, telling an audience during an appearance at the National Association of Broadcasters Show, "I have another idea I've been tinkering with. It's maybe 75 percent there. I haven't pitched it to [Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy]. It's another Star Wars thing." Another piece of a story that fans already know about? Or something more? Knoll wasn't giving anything away beyond that amazingly vague tease, but considering how successful Rogue One was, it's safe to say that Kennedy will have asked him what's on his mind by the time you read this.

These People and Places Might Appear in the Han Solo Movie

Source: Online rumor and speculation
Probability of Accuracy: Frustratingly vague, so let's go with, "Yeah, maybe?"
The Real Deal: Meanwhile, what is going on with the solo Han Solo movie? Well, a photo from one of the sets suggests that it includes a visit to Tatooine, or some similar sandy planet, and the Making Star Wars site has the names of some new characters from the movie: Rebolt, Moloch, and "Moloch's Henchmen," all of whom will apparently be played by the same actor. Sadly, no information about just who these characters are was included, but it's probably safe to assume Moloch is a bad guy, just because he has henchmen. What good guy has henchmen? (Also, the fact that Moloch is "a Canaanite god associated with child sacrifice" should be a bit of a giveaway, although perhaps they just yanked the name from Watchmen.)
