Eric Bailly given seven-game suspension for high kick that hospitalised opponent

Marseille centre-back Eric Bailly (28) has been handed a seven game suspension by the French Football Federation’s disciplinary committee for a high kick that hospitalised his opponent in the Coupe de France match against Hyères, according to La Provence. The Manchester United loanee will be absent for the next five OM games and will miss important fixtures such as a Coupe de France tie against Rennes on Friday, and upcoming Ligue 1 clashes against Monaco and Nice.

Bailly saw a straight red card for the Nigel De Jong-esque challenge on Hyères’s Almike Moussa N’Diaye, which saw the player admitted into intensive care, as a precaution. Despite his early dismissal from this Coupe de France tie, Marseille got the job done, beating their opponents 2-0 thanks to goals from Bamba Dieng and Alexis Sánchez. The Ivory Coast International has already served a share of his suspension. He missed two games OM that won, against Troyes and Lorient. Bailly is playing a peripheral role at Marseille as Croatian manager Igor Tudor relies on a 3-man defense with Samuel Gigot, Chancel Mbemba and Leonardo Balerdi. Bailly’s contract with Manchester United expires in 2024.
