The reporter-source shield bill sponsored by Rep. Rick Boucher, D-VA, with 71 co-sponsors was approved by the House by a vote of 398-21. There was a single amendment, put forward by Boucher, responding to concerns about the bill’s impact on national security and the witnessing of a crime. A second amendment, offered by Rep. Lamar Smith, D-TX, had been ruled out of order. Shortly before the vote, the White House released a statement of position opposing the bill and hinting at a veto. The House vote, however, suggests strong enough support to easily override any veto. A similar shield bill has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee, 15-4. A Senate floor vote is pending. (10/16/07
