Dortmund agree to allow Julian Weigl to leave for €25m

Le Parisien report this morning that German midfielder Julian Weigl has been informed that he can leave Dortmund this month if PSG offer €25m.

Weigl, 23, has always been PSG manager Thomas Tuchel’s number one priority as a midfield signing this January, and it appears that the German may finally get his way for a player who he coached between 2015 and 2017 and who is under contract with BVB until 2021.

Why a change of heart from Dortmund?

Weigl had been being used as a central defender owing to an injury crisis in this area of the pitch for Dortmund, with Manuel Akanji, Abdou Diallo and Dan-Axel Zagadou all being out, but the two Frenchman are now expected to back in the coming days.

Dortmund have also recently acquired Argentinian central defender Leonardo Balerdi from Boca Juniors in recent days, who is expected to be available for BVB in the next 3 weeks.

In recent days, Weigl reiterated to Dortmund representatives his desire to join PSG this winter, making the point that manager Lucien Favre does not consider him as an important element of the team and highlighting his desire to kickstart a career that has somewhat been blighted by long injury lay-offs relating to his ankle and adductor muscle.

He also knows that he has a small chance of starting in the Champions’ League knock-out match for PSG against Manchester United in a couple of weeks time, whereas he believes he has not such chance of facing Tottenham in the same competition if he stayed at Dortmund.

Nothing is done, but Weigl is edging closer to Ligue 1 and PSG.
