PSG to position themselves for Fabinho

L’Équipe anticipate that Ligue 1 champions PSG will take advantage of the fact that they face Liverpool in the Champions’ League tomorrow evening to speak with the club about the possibility of signing Brazilian midfielder Fabinho from them.

At the end of October, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel made it clear what his upcoming window priority was:

“We need a third top level central midfielder to play in a 4-3-3 or in front of a back three. It is necessary.”

Tuchel has not been impressed with Lassana Diarra, who could be pushed out of the club at the beginning of 2019, he is currently on €4m a year. The newspaper believes that by offloading “Lass”, PSG would have freed up some salary under FFP constraints to attempt an operation for Fabinho.

Several reasons have drawn PSG to the player’s profile: his enormous Ligue 1 experience, his versatility, able to play box-to-box or in a more deep-lying role, as well as being able to provide cover at right-back. With Dani Alves out of contract next summer and Thomas Meunier’s current deal running to 2020, that last attribute is not insignificant for the club.

The French newspaper understands that although Jürgen Klopp indicated his desire to keep the player, that the Liverpool board would be willing to rid of the player, so long as they recouped their investment, essentially a loan with €50m obligation to buy deal.

The question from Les Parisiens’ side at the moment, is are they will to spend that much – Fabinho would be eligible to play for PSG in the Champions’ League next year, were they to make it out of their tricky group.

PSG might hold off, and instead concentrate their efforts in this position on a swoop for Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong, having met with the player’s representatives recently, but the newspaper claims that Barcelona are firmly in pole for the 21-year-old.
