Mario Balotelli was yellow carded for supposedly goading the southern stand of Dijon’s stadium and confronting the referee over what the Italian striker alleged was racist abuse in the 74th minute of Nice’s 3-2 loss.
Dijon goalkeeper Baptiste Reynet was not entirely convinced by Balotelli’s claims:
“I told Mario that I had not heard racist chanting but he replied to me that there were some. Two or three supporters apparently provoked him.”
This was what Balotelli approached referee Rainville about, who then went to the touchline to discuss the matter with the LFP representative and this representative then asked Dijon to make the stadium announcer warn against racist chanting.
Dijon manager Olivier Dall’Oglio was equally shocked by the alleged events:
“That is the first time that you hear about something like this at the Gaston-Gerard. We have a lot of players of colour and foreigners in our team, and we are very happy to have them. There has never been a problem with racism here. If these taunts existed, they are completely out of order… I didn’t hear anything.”
