The European Parliament’s civil liberties committee has backed Bulgaria and Romania joining the Schengen area of borderless travel.

MEPs on the committee today (2 May) voted with 33 in favour and three against the membership bid, in a non-binding vote.

The final decision rests with the EU’s member states. France and Germany have blocked the entry of Bulgaria and Romania, saying that the two countries have failed to carry out thorough reform of their judicial and law-enforcement systems since joining the EU in 2007.

MEPs on the committee sided with an assessment by the European Commission that the two countries meet the main technical criteria for joining the Schengen area.

The Parliament is scheduled to vote on the opinion at its 6-9 June plenary session, just days before member states’ interior ministers are expected to discuss the matter.
