Fresno Football Watch Party Shooting: 4 Dead, 6 Wounded

FRESNO, CA — Four people were killed and six others were wounded Sunday when “unknown suspects” walked into their backyard football game watch party and began shooting into the gathering of about 35 people, Fresno police said. The shooting took place about 6 p.m. on Fresno’s south side.

The shooters fled on foot and remain at large. The residence appeared to have been targeted, possibly because some people at the home had been involved in a disturbance earlier this week, according to ABC News.

Three of those killed were found in the back yard, and a fourth person died at the hospital, according to reports. Six others were hospitalized, but are expected to survive, police said. There were several children at the party, but none of them were wounded.

The victims have been identified as Xy Lee, 23, Phia Vang, 31, Kou Xiong, 38 and Kalaxang Thao, 40. All were from Fresno and all were Asian, authorities said. Two of the men who died were well-known singers in the local Hmong community.

“What we do know is that this was a gathering, a family and friend gathering in the backyard,” police Lt. Bill Dooley told reporters. “Everyone was watching football this evening when unknown suspects approached the residence, snuck into the back yard and opened fire.”

There was no indication the suspects knew the victims, CNN reported. Deputy Police Chief Michael Reid said there was no immediate indication the shooting was gang-related, “but that’s something that we’re going to look at.”

No one is in custody yet, and police were going door-to-door in search of surveillance video that might help them track down the suspects. The shooting took place about a half-mile from the city’s airport.

The Bee reported that agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives field office in San Francisco were responding to the shooting.

The mass shooting is the second in California in four days. On Thursday, a 16-year-old Saugus High School student opened fire on five of his classmates, killing two of them — 15-year-old Gracie Anne Muehlberger and 14-year-old Dominic Blackwell.

Nathaniel Berhow, who was identified by police as the shooter, died Friday afternoon.
