A.J. Styles beat WWE World Hvt. champion Roman Reigns twice in the WWE Title main event at Payback. However, Styles did not leave with the title.
Styles first won by count-out without winning the title, then Shane McMahon re-started the match. Styles then won by DQ without winning the title, and Stephanie McMahon re-started the match.
After run-ins from Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows and The Usos, then Reigns kicking out of Styles’s finishers, Reigns pinned Styles with a spear to end the match and retain the WWE Title.
