John Cena to star in Transformers spinoff 'Bumblebee'

John Cena has booked his next movie role, and it appears to be his biggest yet.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Cena would be playing a lead role in “Bumblebee.” The film is a spinoff of the Transformers franchise and will be directed by Travis Knight, with Cena starring alongside actress Hailee Steinfeld.

Cena wrote about the news on Twitter: “One of the most exciting projects I’ve been fortunate to be a part of. Thrilled to join the #Transformers franchise!” Details of his role haven’t been announced yet.

In the Hollywood Reporter article, it’s noted that Paramount Studios hopes that “Bumblebee” will be the first in more prequels and offshoots of the Transformers series. The film will be set in 1987 and the plot is described as: “Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small California beach town. Charlie (Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary yellow VW bug.”

Production started today and the film is scheduled to be released on December 21st, 2018.

How this will affect Cena’s WWE schedule isn’t known, though he’s advertised for both SummerSlam in August and No Mercy in September. He’ll face Shinsuke Nakamura in a number one contender’s match on SmackDown tomorrow to decide who will challenge for Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship at SummerSlam.
