As reported by RMC Sport Marseille’s 6th tier second team Athlético Marseille have filed for bankruptcy – meaning the formerly named Marsielle-Consulat will disappear after 60 years of existence. This comes after the club would have otherwise been administratively relegated to Regional 1 – the 7th tier of French football.
Athlético was a club totally abandoned : an outstanding debt of around €800,000 paralysed the club – with players not being paid for four months and only two youth team coaches left for 120 youth team members.
Former Marseille, Nice, and Bordeaux defender Suleymane Diawara has been involved in the club since 2017 with Karim Aklil (a former player’s agent) as club president since 2019. However, the National 3’s serious financial problems have been known for several months, Athlético becoming the first casualty with the outcome of bankruptcy having been feared for a long time.
Since May financial problems have plagued the club, with former club president Jean-Luc Mingallon announcing that : “We are now close to filing for bankruptcy”. He returned at the end of 2021 to help the club’s fortunes, but to no avail.
