Coronavirus United States: Updates For Friday, March 13

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency Friday, freeing up $50 billion in spending to help state and territorial governments respond to the ongoing spread of the new coronavirus throughout the United States.

Among other things, Trump’s declaration waives certain regulatory requirements so health care providers can more quickly and efficiently treat people who are sick with COVID-19.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and other top Democrats have been pressing Trump to invoke the act, which offers strong emergency powers but is typically applied to specific states and geographic areas.
