Gio Urshela left Thursday’s game with a stiff knee after making a diving play in the eighth inning. The third baseman was headed to an MRI tube, Aaron Boone said after the Yankees’ 7-4 loss to the Astros at the Stadium.

“We’ll know more in the next couple hours. He was stable when they put them through the different tests and stuff inside here,” the Yankees manager said. “But we will know more probably in the next couple hours.”

Urshela made a diving play on Aledmys Diaz’s ground ball and was charged with a throwing error. Two batters later, Jose Altuve homered and Urshela left the game during the mound visit to remove Chad Green.

“He’s not sure if it was on the dive or when he rolled the throw and when exactly,” Boone said. “It obviously stiffened up on him pretty good.”

The Yankees are already thin in the infield after Rougned Odor went down Tuesday night with a sprained left knee after a home-plate collision with Martin Maldonado. If Urshela has to miss any time, the Yankees have Tyler Wade on the bench and can move DJ LeMahieu around, but they also have Miguel Andujar down in Triple-A.

In 2019, Urshela took the starting third baseman job from Andujar when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Andujar, who has struggled with limited playing time since the 2020, was a Rookie of the Year finalist there in 2018.
