Illinois Boy Spends Life Savings On Homeless Shelter Gifts

ROCK ISLAND, IL — A Rock Island boy is someone many adults and other children can look up to thanks to his recent selfless act. Ethan Simons, the father of 9-year-old Nathan, told WQAD he sometimes worried about how many videos his son watches on YouTube, until finding out Nathan saw people on YouTube donate to homeless shelters and wanted to do the same. According to WQAD, the fourth-grader wanted to take all the money out of his savings account and use it for someone else in the new year, so his dad decided to match his donation.

After calling homeless shelters, Nathan found out Christian Care in Rock Island was open and obtained a list of items the location needed, which included gloves, shoes and some sauces. According to WQAD, Nathan’s older sister is a U.S. Marine, so he wanted to make sure the veterans staying at Christian Care were cared for. WQAD said the father and son withdrew about $150 from each of their savings accounts and went to a local Walmart, where Nathan bought some extra things for Christian Care that weren’t on the list with the leftover money.

“You know you’re doing an awesome thing, right? You’re helping a lot of people,” Christian Care Development Coordinator Cindi Gramenz told Nathan, WQAD said, adding that Gramenz called Nathan’s compassion at his age “pretty amazing.” The family left a few dollars in Nathan’s account so it would stay open, and the boy said he could see himself donating again or volunteering, according to the news report.
