Ireland crowned U18 Sevens champions of Europe in Romania

THE IRELAND U18 Sevens squad were crowned champions of Europe yesterday in Bucharest, Romania.

Stan McDowell’s side beat France in the final of the Rugby Europe U18 Sevens Championship, recording a comprehensive 31-5 victory to claim the title.

Having overcome Moldova, Isreal and Romania in Saturday’s pool stages, Ireland saw off Russia in the quarter-finals yesterday on a 26-12 scoreline. They hammered Portugal 36-0 in the semi-finals, before finishing in style against the French.

McDowell’s squad was made up of clubs, schools and Exiles players, with Lansdowne’s Thomas O’Callaghan, William Fay of CBC Monkstown, David Pogatchnik of Suttonians, and Tullamore RFC pair Conor Dunne and Colm Heffernan providing the Leinster influence.

Alex Molloy of Waterpark RFC in Waterford, Daniel Hurley of Limerick’s Crescent Comprehensive, and CBC Cork man Colin Sisk were the Munster representatives.

Curtis Dundas of Friend’s School, Lisburn fronted up for Ulster, Buccaneers RFC’s Tom McGann for Connacht, while Exiles pair Iwan Hughes and Finn Murphy completed the Ireland squad.
