Mavericks Ranked No. 10 Heading into Nationals

Edmond, Okla. — Minnesota State (10-3, 7-1) is ranked No. 10 in the latest installment of the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll. MSU is coming off of a third-place finish at Super Regional 3 where it had four qualifiers advance to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championship.

Individually, super region 3 champion Cody Quinn (165 lbs) moved up to No. 4. after going 4-0 at regionals. Quinn sits at 22-7 on the year. The sophomore is set to make a return trip to nationals where he finished in seventh-place and earn All-American honors a season ago.

Senior Aaron Norgren (184 lbs) is also slotted in at No. 4. The Good Thurder, Minn., native is 13-7 this season. Norgren finished runner-up at regionals as he dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Cloud State’s Shamus O’Grady in the championship bout. Norgren is returning to nationals for the fourth time and is a two-time All-American.

Freshman Alphonso Vruno is ranked No. 7 at 133-lbs. Vruno leads the Mavericks with a team-high 32 wins to just seven losses. The Sandwich, Ill., native recorded a third-place finish at regionals and is set to make his national championship debut.

Junior David Demo (125 lbs) also qualified and will be competing at the national championship for the second time as he was an All-American a season ago.

The four qualifiers will wrestle in Birmingham, Ala., on March 8-9.
