Moxie Spotlight: Gina and Christian

Planning a wedding can be an exciting adventure, especially when you decide to create your own flower arrangements. We love celebrating couples who add a personal touch to their big day with DIY flowers. In this interview, we chat with past bride bride and groom Gina and Christian who used Flower Moxie for their wedding.

Gina shares her favorite parts of DIYing, why she chose to do it herself, and helpful tips for future brides. Join us as she takes us through her joyful wedding journey and offers inspiring advice for making your special day uniquely yours!

What was your favorite part about DIYing?

I loved carrying around my piece of art all day long. I had an extra level of pride about my bridal look: it was 100% curated by me!

Why did you choose to DIY your flowers?

There were so many reasons; it felt like an easy choice. Most importantly, it sounded like so much fun to put it all together. Both using my own to hands, but also bonding with my family and friends helping in the process. Flowers are so beautiful all on their own, so I thought it would be hard to secure them up.

Secondly, I loved having full control. In the days leading up to the wedding, I knew exactly what I was going to wake up to on wedding day. And lastly, I could make my floral budget go further. I was able to do so much more with my flowers than I would have been able to if I used a full-service florist from the budget I was working with.

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

The ceremony. I totally underestimated how special this part of the day was going to make me feel. It’s the first moment, you realize just how many people came just to see you and your partner continue your life story.

In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently?

I didn’t even think about it until after we got our photos back and I’ve never seen it done before. I wish we had incorporated a photoshoot with our parents and siblings, just as we did with our wedding party. I would have enjoyed more photos of us with them and I think it would have been a fun memory.

Tips for future DIYers?

Don’t overestimate the time you (as the one getting married) will have to directly work on the flowers. I thought I would have all this time each day to work on the flowers and I did not. I helped organize the arrival and prep of the flowers and put together my own bouquet, but I ended up leaning heavily on my family and friends to complete the rest. If I did it again, I would appoint a lead “designer” in your group, who watches a lot of the videos and who you can brief with your vision. That way, there is someone else appointed for all the questions that is not you!

Were there any funny or strange mishaps you can share?

My bouquet was missed when cutting them short and wrapping with ribbon. So the first part of our photos for the day have totally raw ends and no ribbon. The show must go on and it ended up not being a big deal.

How did you add personalized touches to your day?

We are currently living abroad in Germany, so we pre-wrote all our thank you notes and had them at the place settings. We also incorporated a German wedding tradition in our reception. It’s called the cut out race!

Which part of your wedding are you most proud of?

I put on a huge event with no major issues without a wedding planner! Would certainly recommend a day of coordinator though!

Anything else you would like to add?

If anyone is thinking about a multiday wedding celebration, I would highly recommend. It allowed us to spend time with our partner and many of our close family and friends for the days leading up to the wedding and most importantly, it then allowed us to enjoy the actual wedding day because we didn’t try to pack all the emotions, interactions, and activities all into one day. We were able to take it all in!

Also, another little recommendation that came to mind that I would give future DIY newlyweds: buy one can of color correction spray, even if you don’t think you need it. One of our flowers came in super pink compared to the darker burgundy I was planning on. Without the spray, I would have had a totally different color palette and would have been less satisfied with my final outcomes. A great plan B!
