HAMPTON, Va. – The North Dakota State wrestling team split a pair of duals Friday on the opening day of the Virginia Duals, defeating Arizona State 22-19 before falling to No. 9 Central Michigan, 31-10.
NDSU (3-5) got wins from Trent Sprenkle, Josh Rodriguez, Mark Erickson, Joe Garner and Steven Monk to defeat Arizona State in the first round matchup. The No. 6-ranked Sprenkle won by technical fall over Ares Carpio to start things off, and Rodriguez and Erickson followed with a pair of major decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.
Garner earned a 7-6 overtime decision at 149 pounds to give the Bison a 16-0 lead through four matches. NDSU forfeited at 157 pounds, but a pin by No. 6 Steven Monk at 165 pounds was enough to guarantee the Bison a dual victory before dropping the final four matches.
The win gave NDSU a meeting with No. 9-ranked and top-seeded Central Michigan in the quarterfinals of the 16-team tournament. Sprenkle started the dual with a 2-1 decision over Christian Cullinan – the nation’s No. 8-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds – but the Chippewas claimed wins in seven of the remaining nine matches for a 31-10 victory.
Monk posted an 11-1 decision over Mike Ottinger at 165 pounds, and NDSU senior Kallen Kleinschmidt won by 8-1 decision over Jackson Lewis at 197 pounds.
North Dakota State will meet Binghamton in the consolation side of the double-elimination bracket at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday. The winner of NDSU-Binghamton will advance to face the winner of Army and Boise State at 3 p.m.
