Official | AS Monaco sign Nacer Chadli from West Brom for €12m

AS Monaco’s transfer staff seem to be showing no signs of slowing down as the Ligue 1 transfer window comes to its close, having signed Benjamin Henrichs and now Nacer Chadli over the last 24 hours. Chadli joins Les Monégasques for a €12m fee after a mixed spell with West Bromwich Albion FC during which he saw his club relegated to the Championship.

A well-established international having won over 50 caps for his nation, Chadli featured prominently for the Belgian national team during this summer’s World Cup. Manager Roberto Martínez used the 29-year-old in a variety of positions including centre-midfielder, left wing-back, and right wing-back.

Chadli is evidently an adaptable player capable of playing in any position that suits his strengths. This versatility seems to be a calling card for AS Monaco and Leonardo Jardim, with new signings Benjamin Henrichs and Aleksandr Golovin also able to feature across the pitch.

While Chadli has performed reasonably well in defense, midfield, and attack, he looks perhaps most comfortable in a more advanced position as a focal point of his team’s attack. The 2014/15 season is evidence of this, as the then 25-year-old contributed to a total of 16 Premier League goals for an attacking Tottenham side.

It has been a number of years since Chadli was able to come close to this impressive tally, but if there was one manager who might be able to resurrect the Belgian’s stagnating club career it would be the intelligent Leonardo Jardim.
