NASHVILLE, TN — A man jumped on the hood of a woman’s car, smashed her windshield and attacked her after she reportedly rejected his advances three times, according to Nashville police and news reports.
A representative from the Nashville police department’s media relations division told Patch the woman pulled into a gas station on July 28. As her friend went into the Kwik Fax gas station at 2804 West End Avenue, the man approached the car, according to police.
The man said to her, “Hey little mama,” according to police. She told him she was on the phone and didn’t want to talk, according to police.
News Channel 5 in Nashville reported that the woman rejected the man’s advances twice before saying she would not be interested in giving him her number because she is a lesbian. According to the news channel, the incident happened around 12:30 a.m.
The victim told News Channel 5 the fact that she told the man she’s gay triggered him.
“I do believe it was a hate crime,” she said.
Police said the man became aggravated and jumped on the hood of her vehicle, smashing her windshield.
She then put her car in reverse and the man fell from the car, police said. Surveillance video shows the man walking towards the car and kicking the window on the right passenger side. He is then seen walking around to the driver’s side. Police said the man punched the woman in the head and threw her on the ground.
She told police she kicked the man in self defense.
A witness said the suspect goes by the name of Bishop, according to police. The witness refused to provide further information, police said.
The investigation is ongoing.
