As a child of the ’90s, some of my fondest moments took place on a couch, watching episode after episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch and pretending that I, too, could use my powers to appear in a Britney Spears music video. Wacky aunts! Talking cats! High school drama! MAGIC! The ABC show was everything one could ever hope for in a TV series and packaged so neatly in a family-friendly half-hour segment.

Well, it appears my inner ’90s child may be coming back for good—The CW just announced its plans to develop a companion series to Riverdale, and it’s titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The proposed series is based on a comic book produced by Archie Comics imprint Archie Horror, and follows Sabrina’s titular lead and memorable ensemble characters. But, as the imprint’s title may lead you to believe, Chilling Adventures doesn’t carry the same levity as the ABC comedy.

The CW describes the project as a re-imagining of the O.G. Sabrina “as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.” Well, that took a turn. The network also noted that Chilling Adventures is similar in tone to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist—so literally the opposite of anything you could ever expect Melissa Joan Hart to star in.
While this is hardly what we thought a Sabrina reboot to look like, we’re definitely excited to see what The CW has in store for Ms. Spellman.
