Theresa May: It’s not about hard or soft Brexit
British prime minister says ‘nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.’
The U.K.’s ongoing negotiations with the EU are “not about a hard or a soft Brexit,” British Prime Minister Theresa May is set to tell her country’s lawmakers Monday.
“The arrangements we have agreed to reach the second phase of the talks are entirely consistent with the principles and objectives” previously set out, May will tell the House of Commons, according to pre-released statements. But she will add that “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed.”
The British prime minister and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced Friday that Brexit talks can move on to phase 2 after an agreement was reached on three key issues — citizens’ rights, the Brexit bill and the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
May will acknowledge in her statement Monday that some had “doubted we would reach this stage,” but there is now “a new sense of optimism” in the negotiations. She will also say she expects to confirm the arrangements at the European Council later this week.
“In doing so we can move on to building the bold new economic and security relationships that can underpin the new deep and special partnership we all want to see,” May will say.
While May will speak positively about the talks going forward, others in Brussels have warned of more hurdles ahead in the next phase of negotiations.
