There were tries aplenty as round five of Super Rugby was run and won over the weekend.

Three of the four Australian teams came through with wins under their belts, the Waratahs being the pick of the bunch with a 51-27 win over the previously undefeated Aussie conference leaders, the Rebels.

Here’s how all the action paned out.

Chiefs vs Bulls

Boosted by a double to All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick, the injury-stricken Chiefs have battled their way to a 41-28 Super Rugby win over the Bulls in Hamilton.

The Bulls proved unstoppable in Friday’s first half, leading 28-14 at the break, but the Chiefs kept the South Africans scoreless in the second spell as they ran in four tries.

Winger Warrick Gelant opened the scoring for the Bulls after just three minutes, but the early lead disappeared five minutes later when Johnny Fa’auli finished off a storming Chiefs move.

The Bulls were relentless in the opening 30 minutes, pounding the Chiefs’ line and dominating territory and possession.

Highlanders vs Crusaders

The Highlanders maintained a perfect record this season by defeating reigning champions the Crusaders on Saturday in Dunedin.

Former champions Highlanders beat Crusaders 25-17 for a third straight win.

The Highlanders’ victory took them top of the New Zealand conference with 13 points, three more than the Wellington Hurricanes and the Crusaders.

Brumbies vs Sharks

A return to Canberra has reignited the Brumbies’ Super Rugby season, scoring a 24-17 victory over the Sharks on Saturday night.

Entering the match at GIO Stadium after two straight defeats to Australian Conference rivals, all the pressure was on Dan McKellar’s team to deliver.

While it wasn’t always pretty, the Brumbies did enough to account for their South African opponents and square their season ledger at 2-2 heading into a bye.

Stormers v Blues

Centre EW Viljoen scored two tries as the Stormers recorded a 37-20 Super Rugby victory over the Blues at Newlands after overcoming the rigours of long-haul travel and a flu bug that left players and management bed-ridden this week.

The Stormers were back home on Saturday after three defeats on their tour of Australasia and, despite having limited training opportunities in the week because of the illness gripping the team, they had too much power for the Blues.

Wing Raymond Rhule and scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage scored their other tries, while teenage flyhalf Damian Willemse produced a flawless kicking performance for four conversions and three penalties.

The Blues had picked up a first win of the season with a surprise 38-35 triumph over the Lions in Johannesburg last week, but the New Zealanders found none of that fire in an error-strewn performance that saw tries for the Ioane brothers, number eight Akira and centre Rieko, and fullback Michael Collins.

Lions v Sunwolves

Tokyo-based Sunwolves came tantalisingly close to a first away win in Super Rugby Saturday before falling 40-38 to the Lions in Johannesburg. 

Humiliated 94-7 at the same ground last year, the visiting team set out to make amends and led by five points with 20 minutes remaining of the round five match.

But the Japanese outfit could not maintain the momentum and conceded tries to Malcolm Marx and Rohan Janse van Rensburg before a late Atsushi Sakate score secured a losing bonus point.

Jaguares v Reds

An incredible Filipo Daugunu try and similarly remarkable Reds defence has been enough to claim Queensland’s third straight win, beating a hapless Jaguares side 18-7 in Buenos Aires.

The Brad Thorn era, to date, has been built on defence and the set piece as the side’s primary weapon and that didn’t change in Buenos Aires, as Queensland bludgeoned their way through the match.

That was typified by the hard nosed performances of Izack Rodda, Angus Scott-Young and the Reds forward pack as well as a second half in which Queensland spent an incredible 80 percent of time in their own half, making goal line stand after goal line stand.

In total, the Reds made 38 more tackles than their opponents but that number was closer to 70 in the second half, such was the sheer weight of possession the Jaguares boasted.

Waratahs v Rebels

 The Waratahs have scored 38 unanswered points to stun the Rebels into silence and set the Australian Conference alight with a scorching 51-27 win.

 The mercury hit 38 degrees at Allianz Stadium and there was some red hot rugby played by both sides but this was a tale of two halves if there ever was one.

 The Waratahs were lucky to go into the half time break trailing 20-10 after a stop-start first term which Melbourne largely controlled.

 But the home side looked a completely different team in the second half.
